Bengaluru: Heart transplant saves woman

The recipient hails from Dharwad and was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy.

Bengaluru: A 27-year-old man gave a new lease of life to a 46-year-old woman, a heart failure patient at M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre – a unit managed by Narayana Health. The donor hails from Krishnagiri and was admitted at Apollo Hospital, on Banerghatta Road after he met with an accident and sustained head injury on Sunday. He was declared brain dead on Tuesday after which the family consented to donate their son’s organs. The heart was retrieved by a team of doctors at M.S. Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre and was transported from Apollo Hospital to M.S. Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre, Mattikere this morning. The distance of 28 km was covered in 22 minutes.

The recipient hails from Dharwad and was suffering from dilated cardiomyopathy. The retrieval of the heart from the donor’s body was done by a team of three doctors from M S Ramaiah Narayana Heart Centre - Dr Julius Punnen, Senior Consultant Cardiothoracic & Heart Transplant, Dr Guru Patil, Anaesthetist, and Dr Shilpa Rudradevaru, Cardiothoracic Surgeon.
