CHENNAI: Kanchi pontiff Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swamy will be interred at a spot left of the Brindavan of Kanchi Maha Periyava (Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati) in Kancheepuram, near here on Thursday.
The rituals are scheduled to commence at 7 am with an abishekam followed by an aarthi. Vedic pundits from across the country will chant slokas from all the four Vedas and a special worship will be held. Later, the mortal remains of the Seer will be taken from the main hall where it has been placed for public viewing, to the Brindavan Annexe, the burial site of Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati, senior pontiff.
A big bamboo basket with the body in sitting posture would be taken to the annexe and lowered into a 7x7 feet burial pit where also Salagramas will be placed over him. Also, the pit will be filled with herbs, including ‘Vasambu,’ salt and sandalwood. Rituals such as ‘Kabaalamoksham’ wherein a coconut will be placed on the head and symbolically broken, will be held. Such rituals mark the completion of the burial.
Two renowned ‘sthapathis,’ Nandakumar and Shiva have been entrusted with the task of constructing the memorial where a tulasi pot would be placed. The last rites (brindavana pravesha karyakramam) of Jayendra Saraswati is expected to end by 11 am.
Sri Vijayendra Saraswati swamy has appealed to the devotees to light a lamp in front of the Acharya's photograph at their houses and organise annadhanam.
