Deweed land: After Madurai, Tiruvallur warns owners

The district administration had asked the government departments to remove the trees from their premises by March 15.

Chennai: Adhering to the Madras high court’s order in the removal of the invasive Seemai Karuvelam trees, Tiruvallur collectorate on Tuesday warned the vacant plot owners to ensure that their land is free from the trees.

Failing to do so by March 20, it would cost the owners, double the amount spent by the district administration for the removal of Propospis Juliflora. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Tiruvallur collector E. Sundaravalli said, “We have been sensitising the public across the 526 village panchayats, 10 town panchayats and 5 municipalities.”

The district administration had asked the government departments, including revenue, highways, public works and forests to remove the trees from their premises by March 15.

“We will release a detailed report on Wednesday about the works completed,” she said. Chennai and Kancheepuram district administrations, which have also started the work is yet to prepare the report on the number of acres the species has spread and the formation of teams.
