BJP-JD(S) coalition wins Shivamogga poll
Shivamogga: The JD(S)-BJP coalition won the top posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Shivamogga City Corporation, putting an end to Congress dominance in the mayoral poll which was held here on Tuesday.
The JD(S) corporator Mr Yelumalai Babu of ward number 27 was elected as the new Mayor of Shivamogga while BJP corporator Ms Roopa Lakshman who represents ward number 13 was unanimously elected as Deputy Mayor. In the 35-member corporation, MrYelumalai gained 25 votes of members.
The term of the corporation ends on February 28, 2018. The Mayor’s post is reserved for the Scheduled Castes while the Deputy Mayor post has been kept aside for Scheduled Tribes (Woman).
The BJP-KJP combine comprising 11 members, 11 members of the Congress, 6 members of the JD(S), SDPI’s 1 members and 4 independents including MLCs D.H. Shankaramurthy and K.S. Eshwarappa of the BJP and Mr R. Prasanna Kumar of the Congress participated in the election proceedings.
Shivamogga MLA K.B.Prasanna Kumar and Shivamogga MP B.S.Yeddyurappa were absent. Speaking to reporters after the election proceedings, Mr Eshwarappa said that with the JD(S)-BJP coalition coming to power in the Shivamogga city corporation, the civic body has become free from the clutches of the Congress.
This is a prelude to next year’s state assembly polls, he said adding that all options would be worked out to make Shivamogga the cleanest city and a Smart City making use of Central funds.
