Bengaluru: It's chaos galore on Nrupathunga road

The alternate road through Cubbon Park also got choked and traffic policemen had a tough time.

BENGALURU: Chaos reigned on one of the city’s busiest roads Nrupathunga Road on Tuesday as the BBMP blocked its one side to take up upgradation, as per the TenderSURE specification. Only BMTC buses were allowed to ply on the road.

The first day of the repairs saw furious honking, bumper-to-bumper traffic and two-wheelers riders trying to find their way through the chaos. Traffic got piled up till Vidhana Soudha on Ambedkar Veedhi and beyond Freedom Park on K.R. Road. The alternate road through Cubbon Park also got choked and traffic policemen had a tough time.

When the situation near Nrupathunga Road went out of control, some vehicles, other than buses, were also allowed to ply. Since Tuesday is the first day of the change in traffic arrangements commuters and motorists take some time to adjust to the alternative. However, traffic cops will have a tough time until the work is completed, said a traffic cop on condition of anonymity.

The BBMP has claimed that it would complete the work in 30 days. However, going by their past track record it may not get over in stipulated time. The BBMP commissioner, N. Manjunath Prasad, has said that apart from TenderSURE specifications, Nrupathunga Road will be white topped to increase its durability. Since utilities will be shifted beneath the footpath with ducts, the road digging does not arise, he added.

Alternative route
For the next 30 days, traffic will be diverted from K.R. Circle to Hudson Circle via Cubbon Park (Century Club to Central Library).
