Khammam: In a major encounter, eight Maoists including three men and five women were killed in the borders of Chattisgarh and Telangana in the wee hours of Tuesday. Two police personnel also sustained injuries in the encounter.
Venkatapuram Area Committee secretary Veeraiah aka Lachanna were among the deceased. It is suspected that Telangana Maoist party secretary Haribhushan aka Narayana is also among the deceased.
The police recovered one AK-47, two SLR, three Infas and one 303 rifles apart from other material from the encounter site.
The encounter had taken place between Nimmalaboru village in Bijapur district in Chattisgarh and Bochalanka village under Charla mandal in Telangana.
Sources said that the Telangana and Chattisgarh police conducted a joint operation to flush out Maoists. They reached the spot based on the information about a Maoist meeting taking place there and surrounded the site. It is also suspected that some other leaders escaped from the place by firing on police.
