Chennai: Three North Indian tourists were severely injured when they fell off a local train going from Tambaram to Chennai Beach on Thursday morning. Services on the line were stopped for more than 30 minutes, according to sources.

The injured, Sumanlatha (59) of Delhi, Baplirani (57) of Punjab and Nanda Kishore (59) of Delhi, belonged to a group of 71 tourists who arrived in Pallavaram after visiting Kanyakumari.

Sumanlatha suffered injuries to her shoulder, Nanda Kishore to the hip and Baplirani’s head was severely injured.

According to sources, the group arrived in Tambaram at around 7 am on Sunday by Kanyakumari Express. Police said they were booked into a lodge in Pallavaram for a day's stay before catching a flight to Delhi on Thursday night.

They boarded a suburban train at 9 am to visit the Beach. There was a huge crowd at Pallavaram station and they got down in a hurry as the train began to move. The three lost their balance and fell from the train. They were taken to Chromepet government hospital where they are under treatment.

Meanwhile, commuters urged the Southern Railway to resume the fast EMU service suspended a few months ago after the mishap that claimed nine lives in St Thomas Mount station.

As the trains between Chengalpattu and Chennai Beach operate on the ordinary lines, there is a heavy rush during prime hours.
