Telangana: Cooperative society polls postponed
Hyderabad: The state government decided to put off elections to cooperative societies by six months. It extended the tenure of existing cooperative societies for the period. Accordingly, the tenure of governing councils of District Central Cooperative Banks, district central marketing committees and TS cooperative apex bank had been extended.
The tenure of 456 societies ended on January 31 and the tenure of the remaining 427 would end on February 3.
The members of governing councils were appointed as person incharges for the next six months.
The Cabinet Sub-Committee, headed by agriculture and cooperation minister Pocha-ram Srinivas Reddy, met on Wednesday and took the decision. Mr Reddy said the Cabinet would meet again in the six months to take a decision on conducting elections to elect new governing councils for all cooperative societies.
Official sources said the decision to put off elections was taken, following the directions of CM Chandrasekhar Rao who wanted to bring a new Act to strengthen the cooperative banking system.
