Two flights diverted, one delayed due to fog

Two flights were diverted and one flight delayed at the Gannavaram airport.

VIJAYAWADA: Two flights were diverted and one flight delayed at the Gannavaram airport near Vijayawada on Sunday due to foggy condition, said G. Madhusudan Rao, Director of the Gannavaram airport.

He said the visibility was very poor in the morning. He explained that this was a rare phenomenon encountered at Gannavaram airport in the recent past.

However, after 10 am, all the flights landed as per schedule at the airport, Mr. Rao said.

He said that the Air India pilots could not see anything for 200 mt in front of them, hence they did not want to take the risk. He explained that there must be at least 1,500 mt visibility to land flights.

The Air India flights reached the airport at 7 a.m. but did not land here.

The pilots made an attempt but as they could not, the flights were diverted to Hyderabad.

When asked about Monday’s weather position at Gannavaram airport, he said that they cannot forecast it.

He explained that even at the Delhi airport, which is the most advanced in India, officials cannot forecast the foggy conditions.

However, he hoped that the fog may not be there on Monday like on Sunday and that flights will operate smooothly and on schedule from early in the morning.
