Tamil Nadu: Selfie with train kills schoolboy

Chatting by the side of the tracks, the teenagers were taking photos of each other.

Chennai: In a shocking incident even in the selfie obsessed world of the new generation, a 17-year-old was run over by a train between Vandalur and Ooorapakkam stretch on Sunday evening when he was trying capture a speeding train behind him while taking a selfie with his friends.

The deceased was identified as Dena Sukumar, a plus-2 student of Poonamallee Aringnar Anna government higher secondary school. The resident of James street in Poonamallee and five friends of his had gone to Vandalur zoo on Sunday. From the zoo the the gang crossed the GST road and had snacks from roadside shops before settling down near the railway track.

Chatting by the side of the tracks, the teenagers were taking photos of each other and selfies using smartphones when they saw an EMU from Beach to Chengalpet approaching and decided to take a thrilling selfie with the speeding train in the background.

“I think the victim failed to gauge the speed of the train. While others managed to step away from the track, Dena was hit by the train as he could not move as quickly as his friends,” the police said after talking to group members.
