Metro takes an Alpha turn, people evacuated

Work expected to be compled by Monday morning.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad Metro Rail officials on Sunday cordoned off Alpha Hotel and some establishments opposite the Secunderabad railway station to complete technical work on a sharp curve that stretches 128 metre.

Three cranes were deployed to install the viaduct on the pillars early in the morning and as a safety measure, Alpha Hotel was completely evacuated and movement of people was restricted.

Hyderabad Metro Rail managing director Mr N.V.S. Reddy said, “There is a sharp curve from the old Gandhi Hospital premises till Alpha Hotel. Cement segments that were prepared in the godown are being placed on the pillars. This section has a sharp turn and the placement and positioning of the segments is a challenging job and safety precautions have to be taken.”

With Sunday being a lean day, Metro Rail officials took permission from the traffic police and railway officials and began the work.

However, the sight of the huge cranes and cordoning off of the area led to some fears of an accident. Mr Moin Mohammed, who has a shop on the road opposite Alpha Hotel was a witness to the drama.

He said, “There was slight apprehension among the people about the consequences if the cranes fell. Many passersby asked the L&T staff a lot of questions.”

The works are scheduled to be completed early on Monday morning, and the restrictions will be removed following that.

“If the work is not complete by Monday morning, the traffic police has to help out as these works can’t be stopped midway,” said an engineer on the site.
