Foundation for super thermal power plant laid
Chennai: Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, on Sunday, laid the foundation stone for the state’s first 800-MW North Chennai supercritical thermal power plant Stage III being set up at a cost of Rs 6,376 crore.
For the first time, Tangedco plans to award contract on two packages — Boiler, Turbine, Generator (BTG) and Balance of Package (BOP) for a power project in the state. Public sector unit BHEL has been awarded engineering procurement and construction contract for setting up BTG along with other auxiliary works in the first phase at a cost of Rs 2,759 crore.
Another contract for the BOP to cover the erection of chimney, natural draft cooling tower, coal-handling system, ash handling system and cooling water system, would be awarded soon, sources at Tangedco said.
“This is the first time in TN that an 800 MW unit is being established under the supercritical technology. The project will be commissioned by August 2019 and 19.2 million units of power a day will be generated. The state will get additional 6,000 million units from the plant every year,” an official release said. The project, which will come up at Athipattu in Tiruvallur district over 250 acres of land.
Jayalalithaa gave away the work order to BHEL MD Atul Sobti. The release said the project was part of state government’s efforts to make TN ‘power-surplus,’ even as demand for electricity, which was key for agricultural and industrial growth, was also increasing.
