Doctors' device to cut maternal mortality

Chhattisgarh Balloon promises to control postpartum uterine bleeding in moms.

Raipur: In a significant innovation, a team of doctors in Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) here has developed a device, christened as Chhattisgarh Balloon, which promises to bring down maternal mortality drastically particularly in the third world countries by effectively controlling postpartum uterine bleeding in just delivered mothers.

“Chhattisgarh Balloon” is tipped to improve remarkably the prevailing gloomy maternal mortality in developing countries where postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) contributes to as high as 33 per cent of total MM cases.

“The newly developed device which can be made in a labour room itself in just two minutes at a cost of barely Rs 100, may prove a revolutionary innovation primarily for three reasons, It is cost effectiveness, easy availability in all primary health centres, and more importantly, technically and performance wise, it is nearly as perfect as commercially available uterine specific devices (USDs) such as Bakri Balloon,” Dr Mishra said here on Sunday.

According to her, the commercially available USD with provision of drainage channel is considered ideal for managing PPH, but its prohibitive price (each costing around Rs 14,000) has forced the doctors in developing countries to find a substitute in Condom Balloon Tamponade (CBT), prepared in the labour room itself.

CBT is made by fastening a fresh condom with a catheter with the help of a cotton thread. It is inserted in uterine cavity and then inflated with administration of saline fluid. This helps reduce uterine bleeding. But the conventional CBT has drawbacks, including non-provision of drainage channel which denies doctors the opportunity to assess ongoing uterine bleeding.

“Chhattisgarh Balloon” with provision of drainage lumen has successfully overcome all the drawbacks found in CBT, Dr Mishra said.
