TDP sticks to Polavaram deadline

The state is planning to complete the project by 2019 keeping in mind the ensuing polls.

Rajahmundry: Though the TD government is hell bent on ensuring Polavaram water reaches farmers so that they can take up cultivation during the kharif season in June, 2018. The state is planning to complete the project by 2019 keeping in mind the ensuing polls.

The project has been facing a series of hurdles in getting the mandatory clearances from the Central agencies. The Centre is also insisting on submission of expenditure certificates for release of funds for the project. Even as the state government intends to change the main contractor of the project, Transtroy is unable to execute the works on expected lines. Recently, Canara Bank filed a petition with the Hyderabad-based National Company Law Tribunal asking it to declare Transtroy as bankrupt for default on loan to the extent of Rs 725 crore.

However, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been reviewing the progress of the project on a regular basis to complete it by 2019-end.
