Hyderabad: Complications after surgery anger kin
Hyderabad: Severe infection in the bone graft after surgery has created complications in 21-year-old Kiran Kumar B whose family members held a dharna outside Global Hospitals, L B Nagar, on Saturday.
Kiran had an accident on November 2 and his right leg thighbone was severely damaged. There was a fracture of the thigh bone and femur region, due to which he required grafting. A small bone from the left leg had been removed and inserted into the right thigh, which is a protocol when the thigh bone is ‘broken open’.
Kiran’s brother-in-law Sandeep Kumar says, “In November, we paid Rs 4.5 lakh to the hospital. In December, we paid Rs 80,000 for treatment. Today, they told us that there’s a severe infection and the procedure has to be repeated. We were shocked. How did the infection occur?”
Sandeep says the family spoke to doctors, who explained these were post-operative complications and that, as the injury was very severe, there’s a possibility of infection. “Kiran is in pain. He can’t walk as his right leg has been operated upon; and his left leg was also operated for removal of the bone. We want proper treatment. We have spent a lot of money and the hospital is asking for more money.”
Angry, with being asked to deposit Rs 50,000, the family sat on a dharna outside the hospital. Dr Birender Kumar, head of medical services at Global Hospitals, says, “The infection in the graft is a post-operative complication that occurs in road accident victims. While the wound was cleaned, there are chances of infection due to the residues left behind.” The procedure of opening the wound and cleaning it again will have to be carried out. Sandeep doesn’t quite agree.
