Cruel Arrow Attack on Bull Sparks Outrage in Odisha Village
Villagers, activists demand stricter action against rising cases of animal cruelty

Bhubaneswar: Shock and anger gripped Bahanada Raghunathpur village under Khunta block in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district after a bull was found bleeding profusely from an arrow wound in what residents described as a “deeply inhumane” act of cruelty.
The attacker—believed to be a local man—has not yet been identified, sources said on Friday.
A veterinary team led by Udayanath Hembram, district youth wing president of the Adivasi Sengel Abhiyan, reached the spot and administered emergency treatment. While the bull is now stable and recovering, it continues to require medical care due to the severity of the injury.
The incident has triggered widespread concern among villagers and animal welfare activists, who are calling for stronger enforcement against violence toward animals. Police have not yet issued a statement on the attack.
Residents recounted finding the bull struggling to stand as blood streamed from the wound.
“Someone shot the bull with an arrow on Tuesday night. It was tied with a rope and suffering in pain,” a villager said. The arrow was later removed, and the animal was given injections and ointment before being sheltered behind a house.
Villagers questioned the motive behind the attack, saying even if the animal had strayed into a field during the farming season, it did not justify such brutality.
“It cannot even speak, yet it was targeted so mercilessly,” a resident said, urging authorities to ensure accountability and prevent similar acts in the future.
