Youth Critically Injured in Broad-Daylight Sword Attack in Bhubaneswar

A youth was critically injured after being chased and attacked with a sword in Bhubaneswar's Samantarapur area, with police probing the incident and suspecting a family dispute.

A youth was critically injured after being allegedly attacked with a sword by a group of miscreants in broad daylight in Bhubaneswar on Monday, triggering panic among residents of the Samantarapur area under the Lingaraj police station limits.

The victim, identified as Deepak Kumar, was reportedly chased by the assailants before being assaulted with a sword. He suffered grievous injuries and collapsed on the spot in a pool of blood.

Locals rushed to his aid and shifted him to the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to SCB Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH) in Cuttack, where he is undergoing treatment. His condition is stated to be critical.

Soon after the attack, a team from the Lingaraj Police Station reached the scene and launched an investigation. Police have begun collecting evidence, examining CCTV footage from the locality and questioning eyewitnesses to identify the attackers and ascertain the sequence of events.

Preliminary investigation suggests the assault may have stemmed from a family dispute. However, police said the exact motive behind the attack and the identities of the assailants are yet to be established. Efforts are underway to trace those involved, and further investigation is in progress.

The brazen attack, carried out in broad daylight in a busy residential locality, has sparked concern among local residents over public safety and the growing incidence of violent crimes in the city.

The incident comes barely six weeks after another serious assault on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar. On June 5, a youth identified as Hadibandhu Pradhan was allegedly stabbed in the abdomen by a friend following a dispute in the Balianta area. He was initially admitted to Capital Hospital before being shifted to SCBMCH in Cuttack after his condition worsened.
