UDUPI: Two unidentified burqa-clad individuals allegedly attempted to kidnap a five-month-old baby from a house on Thursday afternoon at Belapur near Shirva, about 18 km from the district headquarters Udupi. A girl who tried to stop the abduction sustained injuries during the scuffle.

According to the complaint filed by the child’s mother, she had left for a nearby programme, leaving her infant son and a relative girl (her husband's niece) at home on Friday afternoon. Some of the family members also had been out for prayer.

Around 1.50 pm, two individuals in burqas are said to have entered the house.

The relative girl in the house saw one of the individuals in the burqa lifting the sleeping infant from the cradle. She immediately screamed and grabbed the hand in an attempt to prevent the abduction. In retaliation, an individual in the burqa allegedly pushed her against the wall and scratched her right arm with a sharp object.

Later, when the mother returned home, the girl narrated the ordeal.
