Theft Case In Bhubaneswar Ends In Conviction Within 18 Days

The complainant alleged that five mobile phones and a motorcycle had been stolen from the establishment.


Bhubaneswar: A theft case in Bhubaneswar has resulted in conviction and sentencing within 18 days of registration of the FIR, marking a swift investigation and trial process.

The Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC)-IV court in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday sentenced 26-year-old Sunil Sethy to one year’s imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 after finding him guilty in the case.

The case was registered at Badagada police station on August 8 based on a complaint lodged by Abinash Pritam Nayak, owner of Ellux Car Care on Tankapani Road. The complainant alleged that five mobile phones and a motorcycle had been stolen from the establishment.

Police registered a case under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and assigned the investigation to Sub-Inspector Rajesh Kumar Gouda. The accused was arrested on August 9 after police examined CCTV footage from the premises.

The investigating officer submitted the chargesheet on August 14, within five days of registration of the case. The trial commenced on August 17.

During the trial, the prosecution examined nine witnesses and produced 15 documentary exhibits. CCTV footage, along with the requisite certificate under Section 63(4) of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, was also submitted as evidence before the court.

After examining the evidence and hearing arguments from both sides, the court convicted Sethy on August 26 and sentenced him to one year’s imprisonment besides imposing the fine.

The prosecution was represented by Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Niranjan Behera.

The entire process, from registration of the FIR to conviction and sentencing, was completed in 18 days. The swift disposal of the case was attributed to coordinated efforts by the investigating team, prosecution and judiciary in ensuring speedy justice.
