Rape Accused Who Fled Bhubaneswar Police Custody Held in Bengaluru
The accused, a resident of Bhadrak district, allegedly fled custody on the pretext of stepping out for breakfast, triggering a security lapse at the police station
Bhubaneswar: A rape accused who escaped from the Women's Police Station in Bhubaneswar while in police custody has been arrested by the Commissionerate Police in Bengaluru, officials said.
The accused, a resident of Bhadrak district, allegedly fled custody on the pretext of stepping out for breakfast, triggering a security lapse at the police station. A case was subsequently registered at Capital Police Station in Bhubaneswar, and a special team was constituted to track him down.
Acting on leads gathered during the investigation, police traced his movements and arrested him in Bengaluru. He was brought back to Bhubaneswar and produced before a court. He has been remanded in connection with the pending cases, police sources said.
The accused will be interrogated further in connection with the rape case as well as his escape from police custody. The Commissionerate Police is also examining the circumstances that led to the incident and whether any negligence was involved on the part of personnel on duty.
"After escaping from police custody, the accused was tracked for eight days. A team located and arrested him in Bengaluru. He was produced before the magistrate and later brought back to Bhubaneswar by bus on Thursday. He has been forwarded to the court," Police Commissioner S Dev Dutta Singh said.
