NCRB: Domestic Violence Tops Crimes Against Women in India

In 2022, India recorded 45,256 cases of crimes against women.

Domestic violence and assault are the most reported crimes against women in India. The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) identifies "Cruelty by husband or his relatives" under Section 498A of the Indian Penal Code as the most frequent.

Key Highlights:
1. Domestic Violence Prevalence:
In 2022, India recorded 45,256 cases of crimes against women, a 4% rise from the previous year.
Of these, 31.4% were cruelty by husbands or relatives.
The crime rate per 100,000 women increased to 66.4 in 2022 from 64.5 in 2021.
2. Assault and Related Offences:
Assault with intent to outrage modesty accounted for 18.7% of crimes.
Kidnapping and abduction of women comprised 19.2%, and rape cases 7.1%.
3. State-wise Data:
Uttar Pradesh led with 65,743 cases.
Maharashtra and Rajasthan followed with 45,331 and 45,058 cases, respectively.
4. National Commission for Women (NCW) Data:
In 2024, NCW received 25,743 complaints, 24% related to domestic violence.
Complaints about the right to live with dignity topped at 28%, followed by domestic violence and dowry harassment.
5. Legal Framework:
Section 498A addresses cruelty by husbands or relatives.
The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005, provides civil remedies like protection orders, residence rights, and monetary relief.
Helplines and NGOs support victims.

Despite strict laws and growing awareness, domestic violence and assault persist. Underreporting due to stigma highlights the need for stronger support systems and awareness campaigns.
