BJP leader’s son held for cocaine party at Star Hotel

Hyderabad: BJP leader Gajjala Yoganand’s 37-year-old son Gajjala Vivekanand was apprehended by the Cyberabad police for allegedly consuming cocaine at a ‘drug party’ organised in a five-star hotel room in Gachibowli on Saturday night.

Vivekanand, who is the director of construction company Manjeera Group, had a dedicated room, numbered 1200, which he always used and often brought along his friends, according to the staff of Radisson Hotel, where the police had conducted a raid based on a tip-off.

The police said that the party was organised by a person identified as Syed Abbas, who allegedly procured the drugs. He is currently on the run.

Cyberabad police commissioner Avinash Mohanty said: “It was revealed that a group of 10 individuals attended the party and are suspected of collectively consuming drugs, including cocaine wrapped in a paper roll.”

The police said cases were registered against Vivekanand and two others, identified as Nirbhay and Kedhar, under the NDPS Act. “Additionally, six individuals are under scrutiny and action will be taken based on CCTV footage,” Mohanty said.

Sources said that by the time the police approached the hotel, the party had ended and the accused had left, following which the police undertook a series of search operations in the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday to arrest the accused.

“Our team was present at their house from midnight until morning to take them into custody. They refused to come out; in the morning, around 6 am, the team arrested them. Blood and urine samples were taken to check for cocaine use. Vivekanand, along with two others named Nirbhay and Kedar, tested positive for drugs,” said Gachibowli police inspector James Babu.

Sources revealed that accused Syed Abbas worked with Vivekanand in his construction company and was connected with drug suppliers. “We are currently investigating the accused alongside the remaining seven individuals who were partying on Saturday in the hotel room,” a police official said.

The police said that other individuals, Raghu Charan, Sandeep, Lishi, and Krishi, were found to have consumed drugs and have been included in the list of accused. A hunt is underway to locate the absconding accused, the cop said.
