Guwahati: Assam Police on Friday detained 36 suspected Bangladeshi nationals during a targeted anti-infiltration operation at Jogamaya Ferry Ghat in Dhubri district, a sensitive area along the India-Bangladesh border.

Acting on a specific intelligence tip off, police conducted the raid and took the group into custody. Dhubri Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Debasish Borah told reporters that all 36 individuals have been identified as Bangladeshi nationals, with no Indian citizens found among them. Interrogations are ongoing to establish the exact entry routes, possible involvement of traffickers or middlemen, and further details of their plans.

According to preliminary information, the group had travelled by boat from Hatsingimari to Dhubri. Police said that they are residents of Chapai Nawabganj in Bangladesh’s Rajshahi district. Informing that the individuals had plan to proceed further to Chennai in Tamil Nadu, security sources said that a middleman named Milan is allegedly linked to arranging their travel, though this remains under investigation.

Related accounts noted intelligence of a larger group of around 38 people who had entered India illegally through riverine border routes.

Police said that the middle-men had charged Rs 15,000–17,000 per person to facilitate the crossing. Authorities are probing the organised network involved in the illegal entry and onward movement.

The detainees will face legal action under relevant provisions of the Foreigners Act and Passport Act. Police have intensified searches in the area, including other ferry ghats, bus terminals, and railway stations, to locate any remaining members of the group or associates.

The group of Bangladeshi nationals mostly in between the age group of 30-40 had entered India in Meghalaya, security sources said.
