Chennai: Woman's body found in well after 18 months, two arrested
CHENNAI: In a shocking incident near Chennai, the police and fire and rescue personnel, on Saturday retrieved remains of a woman murdered 18 months ago. The victim was identified as Parveen Banu (25), wife of Ilayaraja (30) of Karur. Mother of two, Parveen Banu had estranged herself from husband and children during June 2015 over a family dispute and settled near Perungalathur, without informing her whereabouts to her family. Karur police on a complaint from Ilayaraja filed a woman missing case, police sources said. According to the police, Parveen Banu had rented a house at Sasikumar Nagar near Perungalathur. “Subsequently, she befriended Manickam (28) and Raja (32) of the same locality. They visited her frequently and during one of the fights, they allegedly strangled her to death on June 2016 and dumped her body in a nearby agricultural well,” the police said.
The crime came to light when accused switched on a smartphone they took from Parveen Banu on Thursday. Karur police, who have been tracing her phone signal, located the smartphone and visited Chennai in search of Parveen Banu. “When we located the phone at Perungalathur, Manickam and Raja were in possession of the phone. During interrogation, both admitted to their crime,” the police officials said. Had Parveen Banu switched on her phone earlier, we would have easily located her and she would have been saved, the police officer sighed. Police with the help of fire and rescue team have retrieved the remains of Parveen and sent to Royapettah general hospital for examination. Police also arrested both the accused and probe is on.
