Telangana: Insurance lure makes man claim dead body
Hyderabad: In a terrible mix-up, the body of an accident victim was claimed by a wrong individual at Bahadurpura, it emerged a day after the body was cremated and the real kin of the victim came forward with their claim on body. The Bahadurpura police, who initially handed over the body without seeking or checking documents, are now in trouble. V. Saidulamma, 60, a scrap picker, was killed in the road accident near Bahadurpura on Thursday morning. A person by name J. Krishnaiah came forward and claimed the body. It is now suspected that he did so to claim the insurance money in the name of his living mother.
“He came soon after the accident and claimed that the deceased was his mother J. Muchallamma, who has been begging in the area for the last few years. He said he could identify the body. We didn’t suspect him, and gave away the body to him after post mortem,” said Harish Kaushik, Inspector of Bahadurpura police station. On Friday, seeing the news in a Telugu newspaper, the real son of the victim, auto driver Mahesh, approached police with identity documents of the deceased. He produced the Aaadhaar card and photographs of the deceased and insisted that it was his mother. “It is now proven that the deceased is Saidulamma, Mahesh’s mother,” said the Inspector.
The baffled cops however managed to get Mahesh to accept the ashes of his mother. “After cremation, it takes three days to get the ashes. Mahesh has agreed to accept it. He can also claim the insurance,” said the Inspector. Police booked a case against Krishnaiah for impersonation and cheating under IPC sections, after a complaint from Ramesh. Police suspects Krishnaiah was trying to get the insurance money in the name of his mother.
