Bengaluru: Rehabilitation staff beat alcoholic to death
Bengaluru: A 38-year-old alcoholic, admitted to a rehabilitation and de-addiction centre in HBR Layout, was beaten to death by the centre’s staff on Tuesday.
The incident took place at the rehabilitation centre attached to Ashrafia Masjid in Hennur police station limits and the deceased has been identified as Fahim Sharif.
Fahim’s family had admitted him on Saturday. On Tuesday, his brother Waseem called him, but the calls were not answered throughout the day. Upon calling at 8 pm, one of the staff members, Khalid, answered the call and said Fahim had fainted and they were taking him to a hospital.
Wasim rushed to the centre and took Fahim to a private hospital in Govindapura, where doctors declared him brought dead. The centre’s staff tried to convince the family that Fahim died a natural death. But when Fahim was being given a bath before he could be buried, Wasim noticed injury marks on Fahim's head and body. Wasim and other family members rushed to the centre and confronted the centre's in-charge Innayat. He confessed that Fahim was chained and beaten up with rods and PVC pipe when he turned violent. Later a complaint was lodged at the Hennur police station and Innayat was arrested.
The police are on the lookout for Khalid and other staff members, who allegedly beat Fahim.
