Domestic violence cases increased by 73 per cent

There were 502 cases of domestic violence in the first seven months of 2022, while 423 cases were reported in the same period of 2021

Hyderabad: The Mahila Shakti Kendra said that cases of domestic violence against women have increased by a large margin this year.

According to data shared by the kendra, there were 502 cases of domestic violence in the first seven months of 2022, while 423 cases were reported in the same period of 2021. Further, the number of cases this year was its way to eclipsing last year’s total of 763 cases, officials of the centre said.

These cases are reported by married women aged above 20 years who were counselled at the Sakhi centre.

Officials said that the major reasons were misunderstanding, ego issues, imbalance in their lives, education and alcoholism, with the last one accounting for most cases in the past month. A few cases also pertained to dowry and giving birth to girl children.

Officials at the Mahila Shakti Kendra at the collectorate said they are conducting awareness programmes on domestic violence at all Anganwadi centres and training women in self-defence techniques as well.

G. Anitha Reddy, a counsellor at a Sakhi centre, said, “We are receiving more cases from Muslim women over the past month, as the husband leaves for Dubai after the marriage and performs a second marriage there.”
