Hyderabad: Businessmen friend held for taking Rs 1crore ransom

On learning that Parekh’s brother has allegedly cheated a company of Rs 40 crore, Almas hatched a plan to kidnap the financier.

Hyderabad: Within 24 hours, the city police apprehended three persons for kidnapping a financier and collecting a ransom of Rs 1 crore.

Police said two more accused are absconding and special teams are working to nab them.

On Sunday night, Mr Gajender Parekh, a financier from Chikkadpally, was kidnapped by three persons and beaten up. The kidnappers collected the money and let him off.

Parekh lodged a complaint with the police who formed 11 teams to track down the kidnappers.

The police on analysing CCTV footage of the accused collecting a bag containing the ransom found two persons travelling on a scooter. One of them was identified as Mohd Almas, 21, a friend of Parekh. The car (AP29 AP 6543) used to drop Parekh was also identified as Almas’.

Subsequently, two of Almas’ associates, Mohd Akbar, 22, a graduate student, and Mir Shafeeq Ali, 19, were held. The police recovered Rs 35.3 lakh, two cars, a two-wheeler and two phones used in the kidnap.

Hyderabad commissioner Anjani Kumar said Parekh and Almas used to meet regularly near a pushcart at Domalguda for the last four years and became friends.

Almas made his friends Akbar, Shafeeq and two others a part of the conspiracy and offered them a share. While kidnapping Parekh in a car, Almas stayed at a distance and kept an eye and followed the car.

“Parekh was confined at Almas’ house in Misrigunj, from where they made him call his friend and got the money arranged. During the scuffle while kidnap, the victim suffered a fracture to his left hand,” said the commissioner.
