West, North parts of Bengaluru divisions top the list in murder cases

The West police division tops the list with majority of murders being reported, followed by the North division.

Bengaluru: The western and northern parts of the city, which have been a hub of rowdies, have recorded an increase in the number of murder and attempt to murder cases in these parts of the city, shows the recent data from the City Crime Records Bureau. Also, the reason behind murders in majority of the cases reported from these two parts is personal rivalry.

The West police division tops the list with majority of murders being reported, followed by the North division. In attempts to murder, the North division tops the list followed by the West division. In 2016, 228 murders were reported across the city, of which 211 were detected. In 2017, the number rose to 235 cases, of which 227 cases were detected. But with attempts to murder, the number of cases has gone down from 583 in 2016 to 578 in 2017.

Earlier this year, City Police Commissioner T. Suneel Kumar had directed the police to shoot offenders in the leg. He had directed police constables to carry their rifles during night beats and to use the firearms if necessary to defend themselves.

On the higher number of murder and attempt to murder cases from the two divisions, Mr Kumar said that the two divisions have many police stations under them. “We keep a watch on habitual offenders, rowdy-sheeters and history-sheeters. Earlier, there were only two divisions and the population in those areas indicated the number of rival gang wars taking place. However, there has been a change in the geography and considering the increase in population, small gangs have raised their head. Henceforth, there will be an increase in the number of cases registered as compared few years ago.”

He said, “We book rowdies who are a threat to society under the Goonda Act. This year, we have booked 11 such rowdies.” Additional Commissioner of Police, West, B.K. Singh said, “These two divisions have more population and we have deployed more number of policemen. We 2,500 rowdy-sheeters in these two divisions and all of them are on our watch. Murders which happen because of gain and other personal reasons cannot be avoided as there will be a personal angle to it.”
