Hyderabad: Resident medical officer Dr Mohammed Irfan of the rheumatology department was attacked on Tuesday night at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences after a patient, M. Aruna, 46, collapsed in the acute medical care unit.
Junior doctors of the hospital staged a protest on Wednesday morning in the premises and demanded that the five relatives who attacked Dr Irfan be arrested.
Sources said Ms Aruna collapsed at 9.45 pm on Tuesday due to severe lung failure. Dr Irfan tried to resurrect her but the patient died.
Angry relatives barged into the critical care unit and attacked the doctor from behind. Dr Irfan suffered severe injuries on his right shoulder.
Dr G. Srinivas, senior resident, explained, “Aruna was suffering from severe complications and was admitted in the hospital 10 days ago. Her condition was deteriorating and the relatives were apprised about it from time to time. On Tuesday night, they got upset and vent their anger on the resident doctor which is not fair.”
Dr Srinivas said that an FIR had been registered with the Panjagutta police. “We want the attackers to be arrested and action taken against them,” the doctor said.
The family members had gone with Aruna’s body for cremation and were not arrested, a police officer said.
Nims in-charge director Dr K. Manohar said they would follow up the case with the police and attacks on resident doctors would not be tolerated.
