Bengaluru: Car thief tries to mow down cop

R.T. Nagar police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab Prem.

Bengaluru: A 39-year-old police constable, attached to R T Nagar police station, got critically injured while he was trying to nab a car thief, who was trying to escape in a stolen car, in Chunchghatta near in Subramanyapura police station limits on Tuesday night.

Police said the incident happened around 10 pm and the constable, identified as Sridhar Murthy, was allegedly got dragged a few metres along with his bike. The car came to a halt after it collided with a lamp post near Yellamma temple. Murthy was rushed to M.S. Ramaiah Hospital and is said to be out of danger.

According to the police, a case of theft of a Honda Amaze car was registered in R.T. Nagar police station on March 23. The police got a tip off about a stolen car in Chunchghatta. A team of four policemen on two bikes rushed to the spot.

“In order to nab the accused, Sridhar Murthy parked his bike in the front of the car while another policeman parked a vehicle in the rear to block his movement. The accused, Prem, saw Sridhar Murthy getting down his bike. He immediately started the car and ran over Murthy, who got dragged along with his bike for almost 10 feet, before the car collided with a lamp post. Prem got out of the car and fled,” said a police officer.

“Murthy was rushed to the hospital in the same car. A special team has been formed to nab the accused. We are also collecting information about his involvement in various car theft cases,” he added. R.T. Nagar police have registered a case and launched a manhunt to nab Prem.
