Dalit abuse: Home owners sneak away

However, none of them had any official document to prove the registration of the home.

Kozhikode: Officials from the District Child Protection Office, Kozhikode, have discovered that the owner of the shelter home and his family have absconded after a Dalit inmate complained of sexual abuse by the owner’s son. Since the home does not have registration, the report would be submitted to Woman and Child department director, seeking the immediate arrest of K C Sunny, owner, who is the director of the controversial shelter - Baraka house.

The officials said that the shelter home, with 23 inmates, both boys and girls, was running on the ground floor of the house of the owner/director KC Sunny, in Kunamangalam. The family, including Sunny, his wife, their twin children, the arrested Austin Sunny and his sister were residing on the first floor. When the officials searched the building on Monday, only one cook was present and it was after intimation that one office employee came. However, none of them had any official document to prove the registration of the home.

It was found that one Baraka Charitable Trust was registered in 2000 and it started this home, which lacks even the registration of the Orphanage Control Board. Two girls were shifted to the Government Children’s home, Vellimadukunnu, after being produced before the Child Welfare Committee and the rest were taken to their respective houses. Since the home violated juvenile justice registration rules also, the DCPO would demand the immediate arrest of Sunny.
