Bengaluru: Cop, 7 aides extort money from drug peddler, held

Intelligence wing constable demanded '3 lakh as fine'.

Bengaluru​: A policeman attached to the intelligence wing and seven of his associates were arrested by the police for attempting to abduct a drug dealer and extort money. The incident took place on January 20.

The accused cop, Babu S., 45, is a head constable with the Karnataka State Intelligence. He formed a gang and conducted a fake raid on a drug dealer, Mohammed Nousheen, 22, at his room in a paying guest accommodation.

On January 20, constables Krishnappa and Ashwath Reddy on night patrol spotted three people beating up a man near Ayyappa Swamy Temple. They learnt that the victim was Nousheen, who was being beaten up for not paying the gang. Nousheen told the police that the gang led by Babu had barged into his room in Lottegollahalli around 9.30 pm and found ganja in the cupboard. Babu showed Nousheen his ID card and demanded Rs 3 lakh as fine. He threatened to file a case if the drug peddler didn't pay up.

After negotiations, the gang agreed not to file the case if Nousheen paid them Rs 40,000. The gang took Rs 15,000 in cash and his iPhone, Nousheen said. Based on this information, the police arrested Babu from his residence in Indiranagar police quarters, S. Poova, 42, from Gauthampura, Gopinath S., 25, from Dheenabandhu Nagar, and Selvam V., 45, from Lakshmipura.

Apart from Babu, the rest of the accused, some of whose identity is yet to be ascertained, were picked up from different places. The police also seized an autorickshaw used to abduct Nousheen and recovered 80gm of ganja seized from him.
