New angle emerges in Vakapalli gangrape case

Leaders and activists from various organisations condemned the action of the Vizag Rural Police.

Visakhapatnam: Leaders and activists from various organisations condemned the action of the Vizag Rural Police in filing a case under Section 108 CrPC on senior advocate, Palla Trinadha Rao, who will most probably be the advocate for the survivors of the Vakapalli gang rape case. Talking to newsmen on Friday, C. Bhaskara Rao (president, Organisation for Protection of Democratic Rights), D. Lalitha (Chaitanya Mahila Samakhya), C. Raman Kumari (Mahila Chetana), T. Srirama Murthy (Civil Liberties Committee) and V.S. Krishna (Human Rights Forum) alleged that the cops filed a false case against the advocate in an attempt to intimidate and discredit Trinadha Rao.

They said that the women from Vakapalli sought the appointment of Trinadha Rao as a Special Public Prosecutor in the case relating to the rape of 11 women in Vakapalli by Greyhounds police on August 20, 2007. The case is presently going on in the SC, ST (POA) Special Court in Vizag city and the trial schedule has been fixed for January 4. It may be recalled that the victims of the Vakapalle gangrape case had approached the High Court, seeking the appointment of Trinadha Rao as a Special PP.

The matter was posted for hearing on January 2 by the High Court. While Trinadha Rao, accompanied by a reporter, was going via car to Vakapalli on Friday morning, to interact with the women, the Vizag rural police intercepted his car and seized all his papers.
