Police book 6-year-old boy in burglary racket

Police said the father, a habitual house burglar, has been involved in several cases

Hyderabad: A six-year-old boy tagged along by his father for breaking and entering houses to commit offences, so as to avoid police suspicion, has been booked by the RC Puram Police on a charge of abetment to crimes.

Police said the father, a habitual house burglar, has been involved in several cases. He was arrested and found in possession of 12 tolas of gold ornaments and 3.5 kilo of silver items, apart from four pledged gold ornaments chits of a finance firm.

The accused, Kelavath Shanker Chowhan, 40, committed house burglaries between 2018 and 2019 in Sangareddy and Cyberabad commissionerate areas. He was arrested by the Chandanagar Police last year, Cyberabad police commissioner Stephen Ravindra stated.

“After release from jail, he again committed three property offences in the limits of Cyberabad commissionerate in 2021. He changed his modus operandi, switched vehicles and started taking his six-year-old son along with him to avoid any suspicion about his movements while committing property offences.

He was recently involved in two cases -- one in Narsingi police station limits and another in the RC Puram police limits,” the official said.

“Apart from the seized ornaments, the remaining part of the pledged gold is yet to be recovered from the finance firm in Zaheerabad. This will be done after taking the accused into police custody.”

Shanker Chowhan, after committing the offences, used to hand over the stolen property to his accomplice, Rongu Krishna Chary, who would dispose them of at various jewellery shops in Bidar town. RC Puram Police Inspector Sanjay Kumar and his team verified CCTV footage from the scene of the offence and apprehended the offender along with his vehicle used for committing the offences.

“The boy is absconding and we were told that he has gone into hiding along with his mother. Efforts are on to trace him,” RC Puram police said.
