Fleeing robber shot at in Chikkajala

Thieves carried out six robberies in 1 1/2 hours. Hunt on for Khan's accomplices.

Bengaluru: The Northeast division police opened fire on a notorious thief, injuring his leg, after he attacked the policemen in a bid to escape, in Chikkajala early Thursday.

Police said the arrested has been identified as Mohammad Ashraf Khan, and they have launched a manhunt for his associates. The gang was returning after committing robberies.

According to police, six robbery cases were reported between 4 am and 5.30 am on Thursday at two police station jurisdictions -Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) and Chikkajala. Five mobile phones and two motorcycles were robbed from victims, out of whom two were grievously injured by robbers.

A message was flashed on wireless and the Northeast police division put up picketing points at all the entry and exits of the two jurisdictions. PSI Praveen Kumar and constable Lokesh were checking two wheelers in Bharathinagar near Chikkajala when a motorcycle coming from Airport side towards Chikkajala suddenly stopped and took a U-turn, said the police.

Senior police official further told that Lokesh got in his bike chased the two-wheeler and intercepted it near VIT college. Immediately, the rider of the bike pulled out a long and assaulted Lokesh, who sustained injury on his right hand.

PSI Praveen Kumar who was following Lokesh warned the rider by firing the air. However, the rider did not surrender and tried to attack the PSI. He was shot at on his left leg.

The police then identified the accused as Mohammad Ashraf Khan, a resident of R.T. Nagar. He has been taken to Victoria Hospital for treatment.

Lokesh was also taken to a private hospital for treatment and the Chikkajala police have registered a case of assault on police along with detection of six robberies in KIA and Chikkajala police station limits.
