After the brutal double murder of a senior citizen couple came to light at Ashwath Nagar in HAL police limits on Tuesday.

BENGALURU: After the brutal double murder of a senior citizen couple came to light at Ashwath Nagar in HAL police limits on Tuesday, the police cracked the case within 24 hours and arrested three people. Shockingly, the prime accused is the grandson of the deceased couple, and the murder was for gain.

Three teams were formed by DCP (Whitefield) Abdul Ahad on Wednesday morning and the murder was cracked within hours.

The police identified the accused as Pramod (21), grandson of the couple, Praveen Kumar alias Chotu (20) and Hussain Basha (20), the latter two are habitual thieves involved in multiple cases in different police limits.

They planned the murder of Govindan K., 65, and his wife Saroja, 60, to steal gold ornaments and cash. Govindan, a retired employee of BEL, and his wife were the sole occupants of the house.

The police suspected Pramod and Praveen, as it was a murder for gain, and they confessed to the crime. They named Basha during interrogation.

When police went to arrest Basha on Yamalur-Kempapura Road, he attacked constable Ravi Dashyala with a knife, forcing Sub-Inspector Prasheela to shoot him in his leg.

The double murder came to light only on Tuesday evening when neighbours smelt LPG gas smell coming from the couple's house.

When they did not get any response from the couple, they alerted the police, who came and broke open the door, only to find partially decomposed bodies lying in a pool of blood. The accused had tied the hands and legs of the couple before stabbing them repeatedly.

The police have recovered 220 gm of gold and Rs 50,000 in cash from the accused.

Murder took place on Sunday DCP Ahad said the murder took place on Sunday at 3 pm, when the accused entered the house, tied their hands and legs and stabbed them.

“The trio had planned the murder and robbery on Sunday morning. After killing the couple, they broke open two almirahs and escaped with gold ornaments and cash, which they later distributed among themselves," he said.

The accused went to the house again on Tuesday to cut the LPG cylinder pipe and hoped the cylinder would explode and the police would suspect the couple died due to explosion. But, it did not happen, he said.

Daughter lives nearby The couple's daughter and mother of Pramod live in the same locality, but had no idea about the incident. She is a nurse at a private hospital.

She told the police that her parents were to leave for a temple in Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu on Sunday and that is why she did not visit them. The police are also looking at other angles, including property dispute.
