Telangana: Online kidney racket busted

Police arrests quack Syed Haneef Shanu for duping 22-year-old student.

Hyderabad: Mahbubnagar police busted an online kidney racket in which the suspect lured victims through Facebook for kidney donation promising them handsome amounts of money. Police arrested a pseudo doctor named Syed Haneef Shanu alias Dr Anand. The case came to light while police were investigating a 22-year-old-computer student who went missing from home a week ago.

Mahabubnagar SP, Ms Rema Rajeswari said that the missing person, G. Kiran Kumar, hailing from Mahbubnagar was pursuing education in Hyderabad. He secured a job in a BPO. Four months ago, he came across a post on Facebook inviting kidney donors. Kiran replied to the post with his contact number and expressed his willingness to sell his kidney.

Haneef contacted Kiran on the phone and introduced himself as Dr Anand, a Vizag-based surgeon and offered him Rs 50 lakh for his kidney. He asked Kiran to deposit '10,000 in a bank account. Kiran frequently discussed the issue with Haneef on the phone but never disclosed it to his family. He also tried to arrange cash to pay to Haneef. In October, he mortgaged his gold chain for '10,000 in Hyderabad, saying that he needed the amount for a skill development course and paid the money to Haneef.

“Later when Haneef did not respond to Kiran's calls, he became troubled and attempted suicide in his room in Hyderabad. His friends rescued him and brought him home,” SP Rajeswari said. The next day he went missing from home, came to Hyderabad and boarded a train to Guntakal, during which, the police traced him. Meanwhile, police traced Haneef in Guntakal and arrested him.

Police found that Haneef, while working as a security supervisor in Bellary three years ago, had met Kumnari Busappa, a guard from Guntakal. After taking him into confidence, Haneef took Busappa’s identity card. But Busappa left the job a few days later leaving behind his ID with Haneef. Haneef used it to open a bank account, which he used to share with kidney donors for receiving money.

He trapped many. After receiving Rs 10,000 he would not respond to them. Based on call data and bank account details he was arrested. We are investigating his history," Ms Rajeswari said.
Haneef was remanded to judicial custody.
