Hyderabad: Repeated instances of drug trafficking can fetch the offender the capital punishment, Rachakonda police commissioner Mahesh Bhagwat said on Friday.
He said students were among the major victims of drug abuse and therefore the Rachakonda police would be re-launching Naya Savera, a drug de-addiction programme.
The programme aims at keeping children, youths and students away from drug abuse. It was launched in 2017 in collaboration with the Amritha Foundation Society.
“It helped many children and students gain awareness about the problems of drug abuse. It held awareness sessions in schools, colleges and drug hotspots,” he said, adding that many students were counselled.
“Use of illegal drugs could spoil one’s health and its consumption is a crime. Under the NDPS Act, punishment for repeated offences under section 31A is death penalty. The public is warned against involvement in the supply chain of drugs. The PD Act will be used against traffickers and suspect-sheets will be opened. Property earned through drug-selling will be seized as per NDPS Act procedure,” Bhagwat said.
The commissioner said that as a part of the re-launch of Naya Savera, the Rachakonda police would hold awareness programmes in select schools, colleges and hotspots, both off-line and online, in association with Devika Rani of Amritha Foundation Society.
