NRI's hand found in Pandanad

Divers traced the left hand by evening.

ALAPPUZHA: After two days of extensive search in Pamba river, the police has recovered suspected body part of missing NRI Joy V. John from Pandanad near Chengannur. Divers traced the left hand by evening. “The search is in progress in the different parts of the river based on the statement of Sherin John, who had admitted that he shot him dead,” police said.

Police had detained Sherin, a software engineer who went missing since last week, from a hotel in Kottayam on Saturday, though they did not formalise the arrest.

They said they could not gather substantial evidence to frame murder charges against him, and many of his statements were contradictory. District police chief P. Ashok Kumar said it was still uncertain if the killing was premeditated. “Yes, we’ve seized a pistol from him. But it’s still unclear if anyone else was involved," he told DC. "Hopefully, we could soon arrive at a concussion."

Sherin during the interrogation first told the police that the crime was committed in his car while they were returning from Thiruvananthapuram after repairing its air conditioner. Later he changed the version saying it took place in the godown his father owned.

Since he was born and brought up in Texas, USA, the interrogators found it difficult to communicate with him properly. He had also told the police that parts of the body burnt using petrol were filled in two gunny sacks and threw into downstream Pamba from Arattupuzha overbridge.

Though he told police that he burnt the body at the warehouse, the investigation found no sign of fire inside. However, pieces of flesh and burnt clothes were found there. As per his statement, they entered into an altercation while returning from Thiruvananthapuram and it ended up in murder.
