Doctor shot at in South Delhi farmhouse, fires back at his attackers

The victim, Dr Hans U Nagar, has told police that he suspects his brothers are behind the attack.

New Delhi: A prominent orthopaedic surgeon was shot at thrice at his farmhouse in South Delhi late Saturday night. According to police, at least three to four assailants fired nearly two dozen bullets at the doctor’s car.

The victim, Dr Hans U Nagar, retaliated by firing at least 13 rounds from his licensed pistol. He also told the police that he believed two of the assailants were hit by his bullet.

Romil Baaniya, deputy commissioner of police, said that Nagar has told them that he suspects his brothers are involved in the attack.

“The three brothers were involved in a dispute over a property in Gurugram’s Berhampur village for the last decade. Multiple civil cases had been filed by the brothers against each other. We have called the two brothers for questioning,” Baaniya said.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Nagar’s daughter, Tanu, said that the incident happened at around 11:30 pm when the doctor was coming back home from work. Three to four men attacked him the moment he drove his car into his property. A security guard was present at the main entrance when the incident took place.

“The attackers appear to have entered the farmhouse through the surrounding jungles. They did not appear to have entered through the farmhouse’s main gate. They began firing at the car and my father used his licensed pistol to return fire,” Tanu said.

The car bore 16 bullet holes even as the walls, trees and the road at the crime spot were found riddled with bullet marks. Baaniya said 22 empty cartridges and two live rounds were recovered from the spot.

“The retaliatory firing forced the assailants to flee, but not before they had pumped three bullets into the doctor’s abdomen. The victim remembers seeing one or two of the attackers being hit by his bullets. We have alerted the hospitals in Delhi-NCR to inform us if they come across any suspicious case of people with bullet injuries,” an investigator said.

Nagar was rushed to a private hospital in Gurugram where his condition is “stable”.

The DCP said that Nagar has named his two brothers and four other persons for planning the attack.

The doctor would often carry a licensed pistol as he feared being attacked, the DCP added.

However, the official said it was too early to decide if Nagar’s suspicions were credible. The immediate priority is to identify the attackers and nab them.

None of the four CCTV cameras installed near the crime spot captured the assailants who reportedly came on motorcycles.

A case has been for registered under the Arms Act for attempt to murder and criminal conspiracy.
