Baby-selling: A web of agents, parents at play

Kingpin had network of middlemen in AP, TS districts.

Hyderabad: Cyberabad Police are digging deep into the child trafficking racket bust two days ago. Cops found that the suspects involved in the racket operated through a chain of agents and middlemen at different levels from the biological parents of the child to the childless couples who were willing to adopt the newborns. The gang which collected upto '2 lakh from childless couple had paid upto '1 lakh to the biological parents of the child. DCP Shamshabad Ms PV Padmaja said that more details in the racket will come out once the suspects are taken into police custody and interrogated. “The couples who adopted the children from the gang by paying money will also have to face the law,” she said.

Police found that the kingpin of the racket Vakapally Gangadhar Reddy had agents in different parts of AP and Telangana districts, who scout for newborns and identify women who had delivered their third or fourth child. Once the couple is identified, Gangadhar approaches him and counsels them on having so many children and the negative effects of upbringing them and finally lures them with monetary benefits. Once convinced, he will pay them upto Rs One lakh and takes possession of the baby.

All the couples from whom he had ‘bought’ kids are from very poor families and illiterates. This he could have followed to avoid any issues of any kind further said Cops.

Out of the three kids in the present case, one was rescued from his associate Manga and one from a woman in the city to whom they had sold the baby three months ago and one is yet to be rescued.

Three more he claimed to have given in adoption legally.Based on the demand of the childless couples, who are desperate for kids, he would fix the price and major portion of the share would reach the biological parents and the balance would be shared between him and his agents.

“ Whatever may be circumstances for adopting the child or giving away the child, by violating legal norms is also an offence and all such couples and parents also will face action as per the law.’ said Ms Padmaja.

On Wednesday, Cyberabad Police had arrested seven persons including the kingpin Gangadhar, and recovered a newborn from him. He was earlier arrested at Chatrinaka, Madannapet and Gandhinagar police stations and six babies were rescued from him. He was jailed but came out on bail and started child trafficking again.
