Crimes Against Women Drop 20% in Nellore District

Tirupati: Efficient policing in Nellore district has led to a noteworthy decrease in various crimes during 2023 compared to the preceding year.

Releasing the year-end crime data at the Umesh Chandra conference hall in Nellore city on Friday, district superintendent of police Dr. K. Tirumaleswara Reddy said vis-à-vis 2022, there has been a 20 percent decrease in crimes against women and 57 per cent downtrend in dacoities in 2023.

The SP highlighted that bodily offense cases, road accidents, and cases related to SC / ST atrocities have also seen a decline. Proactive measures of the police force have resulted in a 69 per cent increase in recovery of stolen property, valued at ₹5.47 crore in the current year.

Dr. Tirumaleswara Reddy pointed out that district police have resolved 44 of the 48 murder cases. Overall, liaison officers educating witnesses helped achieve convictions in 1,047 cases. Notably, in six cases, accused have been sentenced to life imprisonment or more than 10 years of imprisonment.

Police have cracked down on illegal ganja trading and transportation, seizing 603 kilograms of ganja and arresting 239 individuals.

On public safety, the SP said they invoked Preventive Detention Act against 10 repeat offenders. The district witnessed a decrease in rate of accidents, with 883 cases reported this year, including 388 fatal and 495 non-fatal road accidents.

Dr. Tirumaleswara Reddy attributed the positive shift in crime statistics to the tireless efforts of police personnel engaged in friendly policing. He appreciated their dedication to maintaining law and order, reducing crime rates and ensuring safety of the public.

He underlined that night patrolling will be intensified to further prevent criminal activities, especially leading up to the general elections.
