Barring murders, crime rate reduces in Nellore this year
Nellore: Attempt to murder cases increased sharply from 148 in 2016 to 290 in 2017 in SPSR Nellore district. Chain snatching incidents also increased from 107 last year to 132 this year but 85 cases have been detected as against 45 in 2016. However, other crimes have recorded a downward trend. There were 283 molestation cases this year as against 320 in the previous year. In case of crime against women, 877 cases have been booked this year as against 1049 last year.
There is almost 10 per cent increase compared to 2016 with respect to recovery of stolen property. The police department has detected 683 property offences and recovered Rs 5,22,37,860 crore by arresting 645 offenders including 17 gangs in 2017. The percentage of recovery is 53.21 as against 45 per cent in 2016. The property lost was Rs 9,79,35,504 this year as against Rs 11,19,45,548 in 2016.
The department got considerable mileage because of the arrest of as many as 365 accused involved in cricket betting including some kingpins. They have seized Rs 52.46 lakh cash, 30 sovereigns of gold, 172 mobile phones, 10 laptops and six cars from the offenders besides 40.8 kg ganja. Other achievements include arrest of four international red sander smugglers, detection of a clueless murder case booked at Chillakur police station in August this year. Police managed to track down one Budda alias Buddadev Behera, 33, of Odisha for murdering a 22-year-old woman Sasmitha Delie of Odisha near Chennakesava swamy temple at Budanam village in Chillakur mandal on July 14, 2017.
Under pretext of getting her a job, the accused gave her cool drink mixed with sedatives and raped her. He murdered her after cutting her throat and escaped from the scene. A team led by CI Akkeswar Rao investigated the case and caught hold of the accused with the help of Odisha police. The circle inspector bagged an award from the director general of police for detecting the case.
