Bengaluru: Cash van driver's wife held with Rs 79 lakh
Bengaluru: The city police on Sunday night arrested Evelyn Mary Roy, 38, wife of Dominic Selvaraj Roy, who drove away a bank/ATM cash ferrying van with Rs 1.37 crore in it from Kempegowda Road on November 23. The cops have recovered Rs 79.8 lakh from her all in new Rs 2,000 denominations.
The police caught her near Kullappa Circle in Banaswadi police limits around 10.30 pm on Sunday when she and her 12-year-old son were returning home from a retreat centre in Kerala, where the family was supposedly hiding.
The police arrested Evelyn for her involvement in the crime by running away with her husband along with the money without informing the police. The cops have handed over their son to their relatives.
During the interrogation, Evelyn revealed that she came from Dubai on November 1, and she did not have any clue about Dominic’s plans till he walked in with Rs 92 lakh in a box on November 23.
The couple along with their son left for Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh in a bus and from there to Vellore, Chennai and then Krishnagiri. There, they took another bus to Coimbatore and from there to Chalakudy in Kerala. They stayed at a religious retreat centre in Pota. They never used phones and kept travelling from one place to another to avoid being caught.
On Sunday, the family decided to return to Bengaluru after a call from Ryan, 22, (who is her son from her previous marriage). The police had roped him in to convince the couple that everything was back to normal in the city and that the police were not searching for them. The family came to the city in a bus, but Dominic, suspecting that the police could be trailing them, took Rs 12 lakh from the booty and told his wife to go to her cousin’s house.
Evelyn and her son were in an autorickshaw when the police caught her near Kullappa Circle. After interrogation, she was produced before a court that remanded her to judicial custody. Evelyn told the police that she had no clue where Dominic had gone. The four police teams working on the case have intensified their manhunt for Dominic.
Dominic had fled with Rs 95 lakh cash on the day of the heist leaving Rs 45 lakh inside the van which was found abandoned near an underconstruction building in Vasanth Nagar. The van had Rs 1.37 crore in cash when it was driven away by Dominic from near the Bank of India branch on Kempegowda Road.
