Public hearing on usury menace in Nellai on November 19

The prime motive of the Federation is to mentally empower the victims against usury.

Tirunelveli: Political and social outfits against usury menace in Tirunelveli district have joined together to hold a public hearing of the usury victims in Tirunelveli on November 19, said the noted human rights activist Henry Tiphagne, who has facilitated a new organisation, “Kanduvatti Ozhippu Koottamappu” (Federation of People for the Eradication of Usury).

Speaking to media persons here on Saturday, Henry Tiphagne, the executive director of the Madurai-based human rights organisation, ‘People’s Watch’ said that the ‘Federation Against Usury Menace’, constituted by like minded people and political parties like the CPI, CPI (M), VCK, MMK, SDPI and some other social outfits, is to take up a campaign not just to create awareness on the issue but also to encourage the victims to come out openly to lodge complaints against incidences of usury.

“The prime motive of the Federation is to mentally empower the victims against usury as the police and the district administration having nexus with usurers have let down the victims,” said Tiphagne, who expressed the hope that more number of usury victims would come out to pour out their complaints at the public hearing planned to be organised at Tirunelveli on November 19.
