Kidnapped 5-day-old infant reunited with parents

Police have detained three persons, including the woman who kidnapped the baby to sell her for Rs 50,000

NELLORE: In a quick breakthrough in the sensational kidnap of a neonatal from the government hospital in Markapur on Saturday, Prakasam police found the five-day-old infant in a private hospital in Markapur itself during the wee hours of Sunday.

Police have detained three persons, including the woman who kidnapped the baby to sell her for Rs 50,000.

The burqua-clad woman had kidnapped the girl from Markapur government hospital on Saturday afternoon. Based on a complaint filed by the kid’s father Yeruva Sriramulu of Battuvaripalli village in Karampudi mandal of Guntur district, Prakasam superintendent of police Mallika Garg alerted all police stations. One of the police teams traced the newborn at a private hospital in Markapur within 10 hours of the baby’s kidnap.

Police have identified the accused as Dudekula Rehana, 26, Dudekula Haleema Begam 33, and Shaik Rahamathunnisa Begam, 34, of Warasiguda in Secunderabad.

According to Malika Garg, complainant Sriramulu had admitted his wife Komali for delivery at the government hospital in Markapur on August 23. Komali gave birth to a baby girl the next day morning. As the kid was suffering from jaundice, nursing staff shifted her to the phototherapy room of the hospital on Friday night. An unknown female wearing a burka kidnapped the baby girl on Saturday afternoon.

Following a complaint by the kid’s father Sriramulu, SP Malika Garg ordered Ongole Police Control Room to alert all police stations in the district. Searches started at border check posts, bus and railway stations, and other important places.

With relentless efforts on to trace the baby, a police team saw a woman moving around near Madhu Children Hospital on Cumbum Road in Markapur at about 3 a.m. on Sunday. Following this, Markapuram sub-inspector Kotaiah and his team rushed to the hospital and questioned the woman Dudekula Rehana. She admitted that she had kidnapped the baby from the government hospital and sold the kid to her distant relative Dudekula Haleema Begam through Shaik Rahamathunnisa Begam for Rs 50,000. The other two accused too confessed their guilt.

Police recovered Rs 50,000 cash and a bond paper from the accused. They handed over the five-day-old baby girl to her parents.

Malika Garg said the accused are being produced before Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate Court at Markapur. She appreciated the police personnel for their swift response and detecting the case within 10 hours of its occurrence.

Markapur SDPO M. Kishor Kumar, CI B.T. Naik and SI Kotaiah were present when the SP announced breakthrough in the case.
