Telangana: Newborn girl found abandoned at bus station

A newborn girl was found abandoned at the Mahatma gandhi bus station on Monday.

Hyderabad: A newborn girl was found abandoned at the Mahatma gandhi bus station on Monday. The baby was shifted to Shishu Vihar. Police said on Monday morning passengers on platform No: 50 saw a baby wrapped in a pink cloth and alerted the police. The police outpost staff and a patrol rushed to the spot and shifted the baby to the outpost at the bus station and alerted Childline.

Police registered a case and set up a team to find those who abandoned the child. “The baby is around six days old. We are also checking CCTV cameras at the bus station. We could see someone putting the child at the spot but as the footage is not clear we are enhancing it,” Afzalgunj SI R. Nagaraj said. Buses bound for Sangareddy and Medak districts depart from Platform No: 50.

State told to probe dumping of babies:

The State Human Rights Commission ordered the Principal Secretary, Women and Child Welfare, Telangana, on Monday to probe the abandoning of newborns in the city and to submit a report by November 9. The Balala Hakkula Sangham (BHS), had filed a petition before the Commission.

The BHS said this year around 50 newborns were abandoned in Hyderabad. In most incidents the babies died due to the delay in rescue. The babies were found in garbage dumps, drains, bushes and sometimes dogs were found eating their bodies. BHS said the Ooyala scheme was earlier in place to put babies in cradles. “But the TS Government has failed in implementing the scheme,” the BHS said.
