KOZHIKODE: The Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Karnataka, to which the controversial Al Qamar College of Nursing, Kalaburagi, is affiliated, has given a clean chit to the college stating that no ragging had taken place in the college. In a report, a two-member commission said that dalit girl K.P. Aswathi had attempted suicide due to domestic issues, Registrar (evaluations) Dr S. Sacchidanand told this newspaper.
“The commission that included two principals of the medical colleges submitted its report on June 22. They confirmed that no ragging took place in the college and hostel and that the girl attempted suicide by consuming the cleaning lotion due to some domestic issues,” said the registrar from Karnataka. However, he confirmed that no member from the commission and the university had visited Aswathi. They recorded the statements of college officials, students and the officials of Basaveshwara hospital, where Aswathi was first admitted.
Meanwhile, Kalaburagi DSP S. Jhanhavi recorded the statements of Aswathi, Pulluvanpadi, Edappal, Malappuram, her mother Janaki and relatives in Kozhikode and visited a private hospital in Edappal, where the girl was admitted after the ragging occurred on May 9. She recorded the statement of the doctors in Edappal hospital on Tuesday. The DSP said that it could not be confirmed whether Aswathi had consumed the lotion on her own or somebody force-fed her.
