Supreme Court declines to vacate stay in cardinal case

KOCHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday declined to intervene in the case connected with controversial land deal in the Ernakulam-Angmaly Archdiocese involving Cardinal George Alenchery, the Major Archbishop of Syro-Malabar Church, on the ground that the matter is now under the consideration of the Kerala High Court.

Declining to quash the stay granted by the High Court for further proceedings against the Cardinal and others in the case, the apex court however observed that the charges raised against the Cardinal are of very serious nature.

Supreme Court said as the matter is scheduled to come before the High Court on April 3, it would not intervene in the case at the moment. If the petitioners find any fault with the High Court decision, they can then approach the Supreme Court.

A division bench of the High Court stayed an order by a single bench to register first information report against the Cardinal. Shine Varghese and Martin Payyappilly have approached the Supreme Court challenging the order of the division bench.
